DIGITAL ARTIST BRANDON PENCE’S ART WORK CHOSEN FOR STATEWIDE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH COVER

Pensacola, Fla. (Jun. 13, 2011) – Local artist Brandon Pence has had his work chosen by the State of Florida’s Department of Health for their 2012-2014 Comprehensive Prevention Plan. The Prevention Plan will be printed and distributed throughout the entire State of Florida.

“It’s an absolute honor to have my work chosen for the cover,” says Pence, who also has his work on display at Full Circle Art Gallery and the Northwest Florida Arts Association Art Lair in Fort Walton Beach. “I’m very proud to be able to give back to this wonderful state.”

The 26-year old self-taught digital artist has attracted a niche following for his graphically enhanced photographic narratives. He captures portraits in a unique and intense way, posing his subjects against light and dark color contrasts. The eclectic, passionate tones of Pence’s art clearly reflect his musical inspirations such as David Bowie, Johnny Rotten and Sascha Konietzko. Brandon Pence has been a working professional in the graphic design field since he was 17 years old. Currently Pence is a graphic designer with Revive Media Services. Pence owns and runs www.brandonpence.com, a virtual exhibit of all his art. Pence also works with clients to create conceptual portraits from existing digital portraits such as graduation or wedding photographs. Self-taught, Pence first honed his skills working for a regional sports publication and then created the branding for Java Jo’s/Cuppy’s Coffee.

I know it’s been awhile since I have updated my site but that’s because I have been working on this… the new version of my website and my image. I’ll be updating the site very regularly again so stay tuned.

I’ve removed the top section and moved all of my social media icons to the left side of the screen in that nifty little box.

I also added a “Quick Links” category on the right side to aid people in finding my static pages. I also changed the look of the titles on the right hand navigation box.

However the biggest addition to the site is Facebook Comments! That’s right. Just click on the title of any article (in this case, “Website Updates!”) and scroll down and you can login via Facebook Connect and post comments on this site! Pretty nifty, eh?

This piece is for the NWFLAA’s Consumerism exhibit. The reception is this Friday at the Santa Rosa Mall in the old Victoria’s Secret (across from Toys R Us) and will be from 6-8pm. I will be attending so come out and say hello and see my work in person!

This will be our first exhibit and I’m curious to see how it goes.

The piece is based on The Limousines song of the same name. The Limousines are fucking amazing but I fear if I suck that dick any harder it may fall off.

In other news… this is my 100th post on my website!

Yay! Clapping! Confetti! Sparklers! Pop guns… HEY WAIT I HAVE TO CLEAN THAT UP!

It’s been a fun journey so far. This website has been a long work in progress. I was never happy with it initially; it used to have this blue/purple color scheme. Every color was sampled from Starry Night by Van Gogh (my favorite painting) however no one ever noticed. It was really just this silly nod to my own ego and it was lost on everyone else. The original brandonpence.com website was also horrible technology wise. It was static HTML so everything took forever to update.

After that I sort of abandoned my brandonpence website in favor of my brand, I Hate Artists. I did this for a few years until my agent at the time told me that I needed to pick one or the other; establish my name or my brand. I chose my name because once it is established I will be able to lend it to a brand to give the brand credibility. The Ihateartists website was still a pain to manage. It had no CMS but it did have some PHP driven sections ( a glossary, FAQ, etc.) but the most frequently updated sections (the portfolio) were still manual. So.. I never updated it.

My day job is a graphic designer/web programmer for Revive Media Services. We were experimenting with CMS systems and I found WordPress to be very easy to customize. It’s especially useful for a pure CMS; ignoring the “social” aspects like comments entirely.

I don’t remember exactly when or why I wanted to redesign my website. I think I was just getting sick of making much cooler, easy to use websites every day than my own.  I chose the color scheme off of my personal favorite colors in design at the moment. The signature red/pink color was an intentional choice to brighten the site so it didn’t seem too serious or “gothic.”

Now my portfolio section is still slightly manual (the thumbnails are made manually, manual XML editing) but it only takes about 5 minutes in comparison to the original 30 minutes of the previous sites.

The site is also fully built in WordPress so I can update it very easily; including mobile updates from my phone!

The site continues to grow and evolve. I’d like to get an online store available soon. It’s just finding the time to do so in between working on art for the exhibit, work and a social life.

Anyways in honor of the 100th post I am going to do something I never do publicly: I’m going to post a fully visible work in progress. Normally only my closest friends see my work before it’s finished but in honor of the 100th post I will share it publically… this one time. This is a piece I am working on for my exhibit. It’s a new style for me and I am having fun with it.

It’s called “Invisible Light.”

Visually it’s still very similar however now there will be more content, more updates, and now videos here. Before I was stuck with Twitter-like sentence updates whereas now I can write entire books here if I want.

This may be a bad thing depending on your perspective… but I’m looking forward to it.
